Firelight is an Indigenous-owned consulting firm that provides research and technical assistance services to Indigenous Nations and organizations on Turtle Island. We specialize in six key areas: economic self-determination (Indigenous knowledge research, socio-economics), Indigenous-led assessments, Indigenous negotiations, mapping and GIS, environmental sovereignty (ecology, planning, implementation), and community governance and well-being.
Majority-owned by members of the Gaa-gwekwekojiwang First Nations (Ebb & Flow First Nation in Manitoba), Tr'ondëk Hwëch'in (Yukon), and Ketegaunseebee (Garden River First Nation in Ontario), our work is rooted in community values and guided by the principles of relationship, quality, and accountability.
Since 2010, Firelight has supported over 250 clients and completed more than 1,000 projects focused on Indigenous rights, knowledge, and self-determination. Our growing team of over 100 professionals works remotely across Canada, with offices in West Vancouver, Vancouver, Victoria, Edmonton, Winnipeg, and Kahnawà:ke.
JOB OVERVIEW
Reporting to a Research Manager, the Researcher supports Research Managers and Intermediate Researchers. With growing knowledge in research, monitoring, evaluation, and learning, the Researcher supports Firelight’s client engagements and contributes to project implementation. The Researcher helps deliver a consistently exceptional client experience.
AND DUTIES
Technical Consulting
- Collaborate with Research Managers and Intermediate Researchers to provide technical expertise in research, strategy, and evaluation
- Participate in discussions with clients to define their needs and priorities
- Support the application of best practices in environmental assessment research
- Support the development of research documents and reports for clients and external stakeholders
Project Management
- Contribute to the development of successful proposals by specifying project scope, methodology, and/or cost estimates
- Contribute to client relationships by understanding and respecting contractual terms, and delivering high-quality, accurate work within budget and project scope with minimal supervision
- Manage information, data, and documents in accordance with established procedures
Community Engagement
- Work with community partners and other stakeholders, including Firelight team members and external consultants, and coordinate their activities to develop, design, and implement projects
- Maintain and develop relationships with partners and clients through service excellence, knowledge transfer, and skills development
QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE
- 3 to 5 years of experience conducting Indigenous-led impact assessments within First Nations communities and organizations (mandatory)
- Post-secondary degree or enrollment in a bachelor's program or equivalent in environmental research (mandatory)
- Proficiency in English and French, both oral and written (mandatory)
