Outdoor Pursuits employees are expected to work in all four of the program areas: Climbing Wall, Challenge Course, Rental Center, Trips/Clinics. Outdoor Pursuits employees have a commitment to upholding the mission, vision, and values of Ohio University Recreation.
This is Outdoor Pursuits’ entry-level position. All staff are hired to Outdoor Pursuits as an OPA. Staff work in the OPA role when working as a secondary staff member at the climbing wall or when attending any generalized all-staff training.
While at the climbing wall and service desk, Outdoor Pursuits Assistants are responsible for providing a high quality customer service experience for all patrons of the climbing wall and service desk, maintaining a safe environment through routine safety checks of equipment, constant monitoring of patrons’ rigging and belay technique, providing a clean and organized program and service area, entering information into the participant database, and assisting patrons to better ensure a safe and fun climbing experience.
Working in the rental center may include knowledge of reservations, rentals, returns, and resale, monitoring inventory, and cleaning, repairing, and restocking of rental equipment.
Challenge Course Facilitators are responsible for everything related to challenge program events including developing the activity schedule, setting the course, and ensuring that the days’ events run smoothly and safely. Facilitators blend a combination of interpersonal skills, technical skills, and a desire to work with people to provide meaningful educational experiences to challenge program participants.
Trip Leaders are responsible for leading eligible participants through adventure recreation activities and instructing outdoor clinics. They must participate in outdoor adventure trip and clinic planning and implementation while considering participant and group safety, experience, and interests. They ensure that all planning and implementation of trips are in accordance with Outdoor Pursuits policies and procedures.

- Maintain a safe and clean environment for both staff and participants
- Review and complete all necessary paperwork, and any paperwork created during shift
- Participation and completion of all in-service training sessions and mandatory meetings
- Effectively communicate with patrons, fellow staff, supervisors, Graduate Assistants, and Assistant Director of Outdoor Pursuits
- Regularly check and respond to work-related emails
- Respond to patrons’ inquiries or concerns and refer them to Supervisor or Management Staff when needed
- Completion of additional duties as assigned by the Supervisor and Management Staff
Area Specific :

Climbing Wall:
- Thorough knowledge of PBUS belay technique, GriGri 2 and ATC set up, and ability to instruct proper use of participant harnesses
- Professional yet friendly interactions with all wall patrons
- Constant monitoring of patrons belay technique and overall safety
- Attend climbing wall related meetings and trainings
Service Desk:
- Fill out, file, and enter into the computer all paperwork including waivers, belay certifications, and rental agreements
- Maintain a safe environment for participants at Climbing Wall
- Track patron use of the wall and other programs in DSE
- Assist patrons with registering for Outdoor Pursuits programs
Rental Center:
- Knowledge of outdoor equipment and related activities
- Ability to thoroughly clean and assess needed repair of equipment
- Ability to maintain a clean and organized work space
Challenge Program:
- Develop and facilitate learning-centered challenge program experiences
- Maintain a safe environment for both staff and participants
- Complete all tasks associated with opening and closing the Outdoor Pursuits Challenge Course
- Review and complete all necessary paperwork, e.g. daily checklists, incident reports, feedback forms
- Attend Challenge Program related meetings and trainings
Trips & Clinics:
- Oversee safety and welfare of outdoor adventure trip participants (often in remote settings)
- Assist with all trip logistics and itinerary planning
- Select activities based on participants’ skill level
- Attend trip leader trainings and meetings
- Complete trip evaluation and review sessions with Student Supervisor and Graduate Assistant as needed
- Complete trip related paperwork and equipment check out
- Safely operate all university owned vehicles
