Job Description

The Postdoctoral Research Associate will pursue specialized research training and gain advanced research experience in the Auditory Evoked Potential (AEP) Laboratory within the Department of Otolaryngology–Head and Neck Surgery at The Ohio State University. The successful candidate will contribute to NIH-funded research with two major areas of focus. The first will investigate neural encoding and processing of electrical stimulation in the auditory nerve of adult and pediatric cochlear implant users under the mentorship of Dr. Shuman He. The second will focus on the development and validation of a new humanized computational model of cochlear nerve responses to electrical stimulation under the mentorship of Dr. Ian Bruce. This work will integrate experimental data obtained from human cochlear implant users with computational modeling and simulation. Research approaches will include recordings of auditory nerve responses, computational modeling and simulation, psychophysical testing, and speech perception assessments. The Postdoctoral Research Associate will contribute to computational model development, software development, experimental data collection and analysis, interpretation of research findings, and preparation of scientific manuscripts, conference presentations, and grant applications. As the candidate gains experience and independence, they will have opportunities to contribute to the development of new research questions and the design and implementation of follow-up studies. The position provides training at the interface of auditory neuroscience, cochlear implant research, , and computational modeling.

Minimum Education & Experience Required

To be considered for this Postdoctoral Research Associate position, candidates must possess a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree in biomedical engineering, electrical engineering, computational neuroscience, neuroscience, computer science, hearing science, psychology, applied mathematics, or a related field. Applicants must demonstrate strong research skills, experience with quantitative data analysis and statistical methods, and excellent written and verbal communication skills. Candidates should also demonstrate the ability to work effectively in collaborative, research teams and with diverse research participant populations. Experience in one or more of the following areas is preferred: computational programming, computational modeling or simulation, auditory neuroscience, cochlear implants, auditory , psychophysics, or speech perception research. Candidates with strong computational or programming backgrounds who are interested in applying their expertise to auditory neuroscience and cochlear implant research are encouraged to apply. Candidates should demonstrate strong scientific motivation, intellectual curiosity, and a commitment to developing an independent research career. Requires successful completion of a background check. Qualified candidates may be required to complete a pre-employment physical examination, including a drug screening.
