Job Description:

Highway Design Engineer – Eastern Canada Region

Parsons is seeking a Highway Design Engineer to support the delivery and growth of our transportation practice across Ontario. Reporting to the Area Manager – Highway Lead – Eastern and Northern Ontario, and working under the direction of Project Managers and Senior Engineers, the successful candidate will bring 5 or more years of relevant highway engineering experience, including experience with MTO planning, design, and transportation infrastructure projects.

The role will involve supporting highway design activities for assignments, from planning and preliminary design through detailed design and construction support. The successful candidate will work closely with project managers, engineers, designers, technical specialists, utilities, government agencies, and other stakeholders to deliver quality projects on schedule and within budget.

This opportunity is well suited to a highway engineer who has strong knowledge of MTO standards, is comfortable working on teams, and is interested in developing a strong technical background, project coordination, and client-facing capabilities.

**Key **

• Carry out or lead highway engineering activities for MTO and other transportation projects.
• Prepare and support functional studies, preliminary designs, detailed designs, rehabilitation projects, and highway improvement assignments.
• Contribute to the design of highway widenings, freeway expansions, interchanges, ramps, urban roads, and related transportation infrastructures.
• Perform or coordinate roadway geometric design, grading, drainage, storm sewer, road safety, pavement marking, signage design.
• Develop roadway models, design drawings, technical specifications, quantities, and construction cost estimates.
• Support the preparation of tender packages, contract documents, technical reports, and design submissions.
• Coordinate with internal disciplines, utility companies, regulatory agencies, municipalities, contractors, and other external stakeholders.
• Assist with utility investigations, field reviews, construction staging, traffic control, and construction support activities.
• Apply MTO design guidelines, standards, specifications, and policies to project deliverables.
• Support the preparation of project schedules, work plans, budgets, resource requirements, and risk registers.
• Identify design issues and assist in developing practical, cost-effective solutions.
• Review drawings, calculations, reports, and other technical deliverables for accuracy, quality, and compliance.
• Participate in client meetings and support communication with MTO and other transportation clients.
• Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior engineers, designers, and technical staff.
• Contribute to proposals, work plans, methodologies, fee estimates, and other business development activities as required.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, with experience in transportation or highway engineering.
• Professional Engineer designation and registration with Professional Engineers Ontario P.Eng.
• Minimum of 5 years of relevant experience in highway or transportation engineering.
• Demonstrated experience working on MTO planning, preliminary design, and/or detailed design projects.
• Solid understanding of MTO design guidelines, standards, specifications, and approval processes.
• Experience with highway geometric design, grading, drainage, utilities, contract documentation, and construction staging.
• Proficiency with relevant design software, including OpenRoads, MicroStation, AutoCAD and ability to review and coordinate digital design models and technical deliverables.
• Experience preparing design drawings, technical reports, quantities, cost estimates, and tender documents.
• Ability to work simultaneously on different deliverables and meet project schedules and budgets.
• Strong written and verbal communication, technical, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
• Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with project managers and teams.
• Experience with other transportation agencies, municipalities, or public-sector clients is considered an asset.

Salary Range: $67,900 - $117,900
