Job detail for College of Osteopathic Medicine - Adjunct

D'Youville University's College of Osteopathic Medicine seeks adjunct faculty to provide hands-on laboratory instruction in osteopathic manipulative medicine (OMM) to first- and second-year osteopathic medical students. Working under the direction of the OMM chair, adjunct laboratory instructors — commonly known as table trainers — supervise small groups of students during scheduled OMM labs, demonstrate osteopathic structural examination and manipulative treatment techniques, and coach students toward safe, competent palpatory and treatment skills grounded in osteopathic principles and practice.

This is a teaching-focused, part-time appointment well suited to practicing osteopathic physicians, NMM/OMM residents and fellows, and other qualified clinicians who want to help train the next generation of osteopathic physicians without stepping away from clinical practice.

• Serve as a table trainer during scheduled OMM laboratory sessions, supervising an assigned group of students (typically 6–10) throughout the session.
• Demonstrate osteopathic structural examination and osteopathic manipulative treatment (OMT) techniques accurately and consistently with the method, sequence, and terminology established by the course director.
• Observe students practicing on one another and provide hands-on guidance and specific corrective feedback on palpation, technique, body mechanics, positioning, and patient safety.
• Reinforce the integration of osteopathic philosophy and the tenets of osteopathic medicine with anatomy, physiology, and clinical reasoning throughout laboratory instruction.
• Model professionalism in every student interaction, including appropriate draping, consent, and respectful physical contact.
• Assist with practical examinations, competency checks, and OSCEs as scheduled, applying department rubrics consistently and objectively.
• Identify students who are struggling with psychomotor skills, refer them to the course director, and participate in remediation or open-lab practice sessions as availability permits.
• Attend pre-laboratory calibration sessions before each lab block so that technique instruction is consistent across all trainers.
• Review course materials, technique videos, and session objectives before each assigned laboratory, and complete assigned grading and student feedback within department deadlines.
• Contribute to a supportive and inclusive learning environment and maintain the confidentiality of student records in accordance with FERPA and University policy.
• Complete required onboarding, including institutional orientation, learning management system training, compliance training, and all health and immunization clearances.
• Participate in program development, faculty meetings, and professional development activities as requested, and maintain current professional certification and licensure.

Requirements

Required

• Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) degree from a college of osteopathic medicine accredited by the Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation (COCA). Candidates holding an MD, DPT, DC, PA, or ATC credential with substantial documented training and experience in osteopathic manipulative medicine may also be considered.
• Demonstrated competence across the OMT modalities taught in the pre-clinical curriculum, including soft tissue, myofascial release, muscle energy, counterstrain, high-velocity low-amplitude (HVLA), articulatory, lymphatic, and osteopathic cranial manipulative medicine techniques.
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to give clear, constructive feedback to adult learners and to work collegially in a team-taught laboratory.
• Reliable availability for assigned laboratory sessions on the College's academic calendar, on campus in Buffalo.
• Ability to stand and move among treatment tables for the length of a laboratory session; to bend, reach, kneel, and apply controlled physical force while demonstrating techniques; to perform fine palpatory work; and to lift or reposition equipment weighing up to 25 pounds. Preferred

• Prior experience as an OMM table trainer, teaching fellow, or laboratory instructor at a college of osteopathic medicine.
• Experience with competency-based assessment, standardized rubrics, or OSCE evaluation.
• Active membership in the American Academy of Osteopathy, the American Osteopathic Association, or a comparable professional organization.
• Demonstrated commitment to serving diverse learners and to the health needs of the Western New York community.
