Senior Node.js Engineer - AI-Powered Publishing Platform
Day Rate Contract | 6 Months
We build digital products for some of the UK's most recognised brands, and we're looking for a Senior Node.js Engineer to join us on an exciting client engagement in the media sector.
You'll be contracted to Hedgehog Lab, working embedded within a major UK media client's engineering team. Outside IR35.
This is backend-heavy Node.js and TypeScript work. If your background is primarily frontend React, this isn't the right fit.
The Role
You'll work on a proprietary digital publishing platform that powers AI-driven text, audio and video content services for one of the UK's leading media businesses. You'll design and build APIs, integrate internal systems with third-party platforms, and contribute to AI-powered and agentic workflows running in live production.
What You'll Be Doing
-
Developing and maintaining JavaScript APIs and services using Node.js and TypeScript at scale
-
Building and integrating RAG pipelines and multi-step AI-orchestrated workflows
-
Working with structured and unstructured data across MySQL, MongoDB, and blob storage
-
Deploying and operating services on AWS, including Bedrock, OpenSearch, and CI/CD pipelines
-
Writing reusable, performant, well-tested code with automated test coverage
-
Collaborating with a Delivery Manager and Product Owner on planning and delivery
What We're Looking For
-
Strong Node.js + TypeScript API and backend development -- this is not a frontend role
-
Proven experience on large-scale projects where senior-level judgement was required
-
Solid AWS background: cloud architecture, deployment, and CI/CD
-
Hands-on experience with RAG pipelines and LLM integration patterns
-
Comfort working across mixed data formats and storage types
-
AWS Bedrock and vector/semantic search (e.g. OpenSearch) experience is a genuine advantage
