Overview:

The Configuration Management Specialist serves as a lead technical professional responsible for directing configuration management services and managing technical documentation and configuration-control projects for critical leased-facility electrical and mechanical systems at Oak Ridge National Laboratory's (ORNL) Computational Facilities Complex. Working within group and division goals, policies, procedures, and strategy, this position is responsible for establishing work objectives and technical approaches, coordinates across engineering disciplines and stakeholders, and provides recommendations that influence configuration priorities and technical decisions. The role ensures facility, equipment, and engineering records remain accurate, current, traceable, and accessible throughout the asset lifecycle.

Major Duties/:

• Lead configuration management services for critical facility electrical and mechanical systems, establishing priorities, technical approaches, and documentation practices consistent with group and division goals, policies, procedures, and strategy.
• Plan and manage medium-to-large configuration-control projects associated with facility construction, infrastructure modifications, commissioning, maintenance, and system upgrades; coordinate schedules, technical inputs, and deliverables across disciplines and organizations.
• Direct lifecycle configuration control of design basis documents, drawings, O&M manuals, startup records, test reports, vendor information, and other controlled technical records, ensuring revision status, traceability, and accessibility.
• Lead verification of as-built drawings, equipment records, and configuration data against installed field conditions; evaluate complex discrepancies, determine appropriate resolution paths, and coordinate corrective actions with engineering, maintenance, contractors, and other stakeholders.
• Manage facility equipment and asset information in the Facilities Service Center (FSC) and controlled repositories, including additions, modifications, relocations, renaming, retirement, document indexing, revision status, and links to authoritative records.
• Integrate contractor, vendor, and field information to support electrical system modeling, fault-current studies, arc-flash analysis, and protective-device coordination; resolve incomplete or conflicting technical information using sound professional judgment.
• Serve as a senior technical point of contact for configuration-control issues and maintain effective relationships with facility engineers, contractors, maintenance personnel, operations staff, vendors, and other internal and external stakeholders.
• Prepare and present technical briefings, findings, and recommendations to senior engineers and technical management, influencing configuration priorities, standards, corrective actions, and resource decisions.
• Develop and implement improvements to configuration-management methods, tools, and workflows, and provide technical guidance and mentoring to personnel supporting configuration-control activities.

Basic Qualifications:

• BS/BA degree in engineering or a related technical discipline with a minimum of eight years of relevant experience with mechanical and electrical systems in a commercial and industrial setting. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
• Advanced knowledge of electrical and facility systems, configuration management, technical documentation, and applicable engineering principles, with proficiency in CAD and field verification of installed systems.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Demonstrated track record leading or managing technical projects or programs in data centers, commercial building construction, or facilities with frequent infrastructure modifications.
• Experience working with electrical and mechanical systems, including systems ranging from 13.8 kV down to 12 V DC, as well as chilled-water systems and water-distribution systems operating across temperatures from 42°F to 85°F.
• Excellent written and oral communication skills.
• Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory.
• Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs.

Special Requirements:

• Work involves various physical requirements and working conditions. As such, a pre-hire physical will be required after offer.
• Visa sponsorship is not available for this position.
• This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a clearance from the Department of Energy. As such, this position is a Workplace Substance Abuse (WSAP) testing designated position. WSAP positions require passing a pre-placement drug test and participation in an ongoing random drug testing program.
