Introduction
We're looking for an experienced embedded software engineer to take a leading technical role in the design and delivery of projects involving the Open Component Portability Interface (OpenCPI) framework. In this role you will work on defence projects, primarily in the Cyber Electromagnetic Activities (CEMA) Electronic Warfare (EW) space (e.g. https://www..com/project/next-generation-explosive-ordnance-disposal-for-the-british-army/)
 
Background on Cambridge Consultants and OpenCPI
Cambridge Consultants undertakes over 300 technology, design and consulting projects every year and operates across a broad range of markets, from Consumer Devices to Industrial Systems to Defence and National Security. In the defence sector Cambridge Consultants has significant experience delivering complex OpenCPI projects and has worked on all aspects of OpenCPI development: core framework improvements; OpenCPI System Support Project (OSP) development; and component, worker, and application development. We're looking for people with relevant previous experience to help increase our OpenCPI capability and deliver these complex projects which are important to our clients' ambitions.
 
What you’ll be doing
We're looking for someone who appreciates doing a broad range of tasks and is keen to take on positions of leadership and responsibility to facilitate the sale and delivery of OpenCPI projects.
Regarding project delivery, the work will primarily involve implementation, system architecture, requirements management and client interaction. Other day-to-day tasks include: mentoring and guiding junior engineers, including task definition and technical oversight; and liaising with project managers on time, budget, project progress, and project planning. There will also be technical sales work which will primarily involve high-level design and cost estimation to support commercial teams in writing bids.
 
Requirements
We're looking for applicants with the following mix of experience and skills:
Required:

An excellent degree, or equivalent industrial experience, in a technical field (e.g. Computer Science, Engineering, Electronics, Physics, Maths).
Prior industrial experience in at least one of the following areas, and enthusiasm for learning about the other:

Software implementation in a low-level systems language (C++ strongly preferred)
FPGA software development (preferably VHDL and the Xilinx toolchain, but not required)

Significant experience with OpenCPI in at least one of the following areas, and preferably some experience in all of them. This must include on-the-ground experience of using and debugging complex OpenCPI designs.

Core framework development
OSP development
Component, worker and application development

Experience in project leadership tasks (e.g. tech lead for more junior engineers, system design, client interaction)

 
The following experience is of interest to us, but we would still welcome your application without the following:

Some knowledge of radio system design
Some knowledge of analogue, RF, and digital electronics

 
Some projects at Cambridge Consultants are subject to security restrictions. This role requires you to obtain a Security Check level security clearance ( https://www.gov.uk/guidance/united-kingdom-security-vetting-applicant ). You must be able to work in the UK without restrictions in accordance with UK National Law and be prepared to successfully undertake an appropriate level of UK National Security Vetting according to UK Government National Security Vetting criteria.
