Definition
The City of Colton's Community Services Department is now recruiting for Part-Time Library Technician. This recruitment will be used to establish an eligibility list for current and future vacancies.
The closing date is Thursday, October 8th, 2026,_or when 50 applications are received, w_hichever comes first.
DEFINITION:
Under thesupervision of the Library Branch Supervisor, performs a variety of clerical library and public contact duties and activities which may include checking library materials out; returning and registering library materials; performing various circulation desk and technical services activities; maintaining library work records; issuing library cards, serving as a technical resource for the general public. Exercises some supervision over lower-level staff and volunteers.
Essential Functions
EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

- Perform a variety of clerical library and public contact duties and activities, which may include checking out, returning and registering library materials.
- Answer directional reference questions and assist patrons in locating materials.
- Perform a variety of circulation-related duties and ; check in all books, periodicals and audio-visual material; prepare books and materials for processing; evaluate the condition of returned materials and prepare them for return to their designated areas; process inter-library loan requests.
- Prepare the cash register/drawer following established register procedures and policies; calculate and collect overdue and other fines from patrons.
- Register and issue library cards to patrons; check patron status to verify registration information; enter patron data into the computer system.
- Review records and send overdue notices to patrons who have overdue library materials.
- Perform a variety of general office duties including answering the telephone and typing, unpacking, sorting and distributing book shipments.
- Maintain schedules for performing assigned duties; maintain appropriate work records and documents including date-due cards; prepare statistical reports on work activities as necessary.
- Assist in shelving of books, periodicals, videos, cassettes and other library materials; discard old and outdated materials as directed.
- Assist in maintaining a variety of information boards, (files and records including the job resources board and the public information bulletin board).
- Assist in monitoring the circulation and technical service work performed by volunteers; provide training as requested.
- Perform light facility maintenance and custodial duties.
- Maintain prompt and regular attendance.
- Perform other related duties as required.
Qualifications
TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
Any combination of education and experience that has provided the knowledge, skills and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain this knowledge and abilities would be:
Education: A High School Diploma or General Education Diploma (GED) is required.
and
Experience: A minimum of six months experience in customer service, library operations and support or a related field.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Must be 18 years of age or older at time of appointment.
- Possession of or ability to obtain at time of appointment, a valid class “C” California Driver’s License.
- CPR/AED and First Aid certification is required within three (3) months of the time of appointment.

PHYSICAL TASKS AND ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS:
Performance of assigned duties and may include prolonged standing, sitting, walking on level or unleveled surfaces, reaching, twisting, turning, kneeling, bending, stooping, squatting, crouching, grasping, pushing, pulling, carrying, and lifting up to 30 pounds, and making repetitive hand movement in the performance of daily duties. Near and far vision for reading written documents and in the observation of participants. Acute hearing for providing service to the public or assisting in facility, or classrooms. Indoors and outdoors, which may require exposure to various temperatures, and work on slippery or uneven surfaces. Indoor work is performed in a variety of environments with natural and artificial lighting and moderate to high noise levels.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
This part-time position works up to 20 hours per week and may work weekends and nights. The library closes at 8:00 pm. The ideal candidate should possess an understanding of library operations, circulations, customer service, dealing with all age groups, and preferably, but not required some knowledge of the Dewey Decimal System.
