Job Description
As an Associate Technical Director - Design at Ubisoft Montréal, you will act as the primary Unreal Engine reference within the Tech Design team. In collaboration with Tech Design leadership, Tech Designers, and programming technical leads, you will contribute to transforming game system architecture into modular and reusable Blueprint tools and workflows that foster rapid iteration and efficient level creation.
You will play a key role in supporting the team by sharing your technical expertise, improving Unreal Engine workflows, and helping design teams effectively use game systems exposed in Blueprint.
What you will do
- Support Tech Designers on Unreal Engine best practices, Blueprint architecture, workflow optimization, and technical troubleshooting
- Collaborate with Tech Design leadership on Unreal Engine-related topics and contribute to technical decisions
- Act as the primary point of reference for questions related to Unreal Engine and Blueprints within the Tech Design team
- Work with programming technical leads to understand game system architecture, including weapons, inventory, crafting, artificial intelligence, and interactions
- Transform game system architecture into modular Blueprint tools and workflows that foster rapid iteration for level designers
- Design and develop clear, reusable, and performant Blueprint systems for game features
- Provide level designers with documented tools, systems, and Blueprints to support level creation
- Define and maintain quality, performance, and naming convention standards for the studio’s Blueprint assets
- Prototype game systems in Blueprint to support rapid iteration and validation
- Mentor Tech Designers through technical coaching, knowledge sharing, documentation, and support on advanced Unreal Engine features
Qualifications
What you bring to the team
- Demonstrated solid experience in Tech Design with significant experience on Unreal Engine 4 or Unreal Engine 5
- Collaborate effectively with programming teams on complex game systems
- Mastery of Blueprint Visual Scripting, including architecture, optimization, and communication patterns between Blueprints
- Use of Unreal Engine level design tools such as Landscape, World Partition, Data Layers, and Level Instances
- Optimize Blueprint performance using profiling and debugging tools like Unreal Insights and Blueprint Profiler
- Communicate technical concepts clearly to both technical and non-technical collaborators
- Contribute to knowledge sharing, support, and mentoring within teams
- Work in a structured and proactive manner at the intersection of Tech Design, Programming, and Level Design teams
