Job Description

The School of Public Health’s Public Health-Global Health Major has an outstanding opportunity for an Adviser & Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Coordinator to join their team.

About this Opportunity

Reporting to the Academic Services Director, the Adviser & Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Coordinator is responsible for leading the major in EDI initiatives that serve students from entry to graduation, maintaining regular advising appointments, and supervising a team of undergraduate student employees support EDI programming and peer advising.

This is a temporary position subject to a 12-month appointment term.

The UW Worksite for this position is at the Hans Rosling Building on the Seattle campus. This position is eligible for hybrid work with up-to 2 days remote work per week.

**Key **

Academic Advising (70%)

  • Advise Public Health-Global Health prospective and current majors regarding course of study, career planning, academic planning, admissions, and degree requirements.

  • Engage students in difficult conversations surrounding power, privilege, and equity as they relate both to public health-global health as their discipline and their experience as University students.

  • In collaboration with program staff, evaluate applicants for admission and counsel students regarding procedures for program reinstatement.

  • Strive to integrate career advising – options that support student strengths, skills, interests, and passions – into advising and connect students to career resources in the School and at the University.

  • Assist in building community for students in Major, School, and University by collaborating on student programming and special events.

  • Participate in advising resource and materials development such as brochures, course flyers, and website content.

  • Share responsibility with advising staff for information sessions and class visits.

  • Support program and course assessment activities.

  • Engage in proactive advising model to support and challenge students to achieve their leadership, honors, research, experiential learning, and academic goals.

  • Cultivate relationships with advisers and counselors in other programs and units in order to better help students navigate their experience.

  • Support opportunities to facilitate student academic success.

  • Communicate with stakeholders across multiple domains (SPH, University, two- and four-year counterparts, community partners, etc.)

  • Share responsibility of enrollment management goal to develop relationships from prospective students through engaged alumni.

  • Provide appropriate support in cases of emotional/psychological distress, and make referrals to additional resources as needed.

  • Monitor student progress as it pertains to the Public Health-Global Health Major continuation policy and University satisfactory progress policy, especially in the case of at-promise and on-probation students.

  • Seek out professional development opportunities to increase and improve advising capacity.

  • Engage with and represent Major, advising, and undergraduate education, generally, on faculty and School committees.

  • Attend meetings, public events, recruitment events, and conferences representing the Major, the School, and its academic programs.

  • Utilize learning technologies to develop and provide opportunities for more accessible advising.

  • Perform variety of intermediate processing and computer tasks using Microsoft Office Suite, Google Suite, EARS, EDW, SDB, and other platforms.

Equity, Diversity & Inclusion Programming (EDI) (30%)

  • Advocate for students broadly, and disenfranchised students specifically, in the School of Public Health, Dean’s Office, program, or in other spaces.
  • Partner with Academic Services Director to develop and lead in executing a comprehensive plan for on-campus equity, diversity, and inclusion programs.
  • Partner with Academic Services Director to assess and prioritize program EDI efforts, and to coordinate faculty, staff, student, and alumni training and participation in EDI programming
  • Hire, onboard, and supervise PH-GH Student Resource Coordinators.
  • Mentor PH-GH Student Resource Coordinators in developing EDI programming for PH-GH students.
  • Build community with student populations through events and communication flow.
  • Liaise with campus partners to coordinate meetings and communications; partners include but are not limited to: Disability Resources for Students, International Student Services, Office of Student Veteran Life, and Q Center; as well as the Office of Minority Affairs and Diversity including: Intellectual House, McNair Scholars Program, Samuel E. Kelly Ethnic Cultural Center, and TRiO Student Support Services.
  • Collaborate with the Outreach Coordinator to develop and maintain community college partnerships that will support transfer student applicants from application through graduation.
  • Communicate EDI program efforts with other program staff and guide their participation.
  • Serve as a liaison between the Major and the SPH Assistant Dean for Equity, Diversity & Inclusion, and represent the Major on the SPH Diversity Committee, including contributing to the execution and evaluation of the SPH initiatives for increasing EDI across the school
  • Seek out and attend professional development opportunities to support EDI programming, which can include but is not limited to: the National Conference on Race and Ethnicity in Higher Education (NCORE), NACADA, APHA, NASPA, or ASPPH.

This position manages 3 undergraduate student employees.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • At least two years of experience working in a university setting.

Additional Qualifications

  • Excellent written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills and ability to work with faculty, staff, students, and the public
  • Experience with and enthusiasm for working with students, staff, and faculty from diverse backgrounds
  • Ability to adapt to new systems and translate for students the complex and growing undergraduate and graduate degree programs and curriculum of the Public Health-Global Health major and other programs of the SPH
  • Strong problem solving and organizational skills
  • Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in public health, student affairs, education, social work, or related field.
  • Experience in equity, diversity, and inclusion programming on a college campus.
  • Ability and flexibility to work independently in a team environment juggling multiple
  • One year of experience supervising student employees
  • Creative, enthusiastic self-starter who has the ability to react to changing needs
  • Experience with and enthusiasm for high school, community college, and/or early college outreach
  • Familiarity with and commitment to the mission and values of public health
  • Understanding of, commitment to, and experience cultivating an academic culture that recognizes and uplifts intersecting identities, including but not limited to and first-generation college students

Working Conditions

  • Occasional extended work hours may be required.
  • Office and remote work setting with significant time spent in meetings (virtual and in-person).
  • Fast-paced environment with competing priorities, frequent interruptions, and responsibility for managing urgent and escalated issues.
  • Regular exposure to sensitive, complex, and high-risk student matters requiring discretion and sound judgment.
  • Ability to occasionally lift, push, pull, or carry objects up to 25 lbs.
  • This is a time-limited project appointment (12 months).
