Description

Summary:

The Temporary Customer Service Field Representative (Part-Time) performs fieldwork related to the inspection and maintenance of the District’s water meters, meter boxes, and related equipment and performs other related work as assigned. This position is part of the Water Distribution System Section of Operations and is classified as a temporary, entry-level position. The position receives direct supervision from the Distribution System Manager and does not supervise staff. This classification is characterized by entry-level field maintenance performed under close supervision, with an emphasis on inspecting and maintaining water meters, meter boxes, and related appurtenances.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Inspect, maintain, and perform minor repairs to water meters, meter boxes, lids, and related appurtenances.
  • Read water meters on assigned routes and accurately record meter information.
  • Maintain accurate records, logs, and documentation related to work performed.
  • Clean and paint fire hydrants and perform maintenance on other related appurtenances.
  • Safely operate and perform routine maintenance on hand tools, power tools, vehicles, and other equipment used in assigned work.
  • Apply basic traffic control procedures and traffic sign regulations when performing fieldwork.
  • Read and interpret street maps to navigate assigned routes and District locations.
  • Perform accurate arithmetic calculations and apply shop arithmetic as needed.
  • Follow established safety practices, department policies, procedures, and oral and written instructions.
  • Organize assigned work, establish priorities, and meet critical deadlines.
  • Communicate effectively and provide courteous customer service to District staff and the public, both in person and by telephone or radio.
  • Exercise tact, initiative, prudence, and independent judgment within established policies, procedures, and legal guidelines.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers, supervisors, customers, contractors, and others contacted in the course of work.
  • Assist other maintenance crews during emergency or relief situations, as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Possession of a Class C California driver's license and a satisfactory driving record.
  • Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth (12th) grade.
  • No prior experience is required. One (1) year of experience involving customer service, public contact, field support, or a related role is desirable.

Physical Requirements:

This position requires the ability to sit, stand, and walk for up to 10 hours per day, and to lift, carry, push, or pull objects weighing up to 50 pounds . The employee must be able to bend, stoop, reach, climb, and kneel as needed to perform essential job functions. Work may involve exposure to outdoor conditions, noise, chemicals, confined spaces and require sufficient vision, hearing, dexterity to read meters and documents, use mobile devices or computers, operate vehicles, and interact safely and effectively with the public and coworkers.

Disaster Service Workers:

All Orange County Water District employees are designated Disaster Service Workers through state law (California Government Code Section 3100-3109). Employees are required to complete all related training as assigned, and to return to work as ordered in the event of an emergency.
